China’s tropical rainforests were once huge. Today, however, most of China’s influence on forests exists solely on the consumption side. At home and away, China are world leaders in illegal logging operations. China’s tropical rainforests have declined by at least 67% in the last 30 years. Abroad, Chinese firms have actively cleared huge areas of rainforests as well as sponsoring large agriculture, infrastructure and oil and mining development projects throughout the world’s rainforests. Some good news is that Hainan Island, the country’s smallest and southernmost province, is home to the largest and best-preserved tropical rainforest in China. Much of the area is now protected and is seldom visited, even though 25 million tourists visit the island each year.
Amazon (my personal favorite) covers most of northwestern Brazil and branches into Colombia, Peru, and other South American countries and is the largest tropical rainforest in the world! If you travel to the Amazon, you’ll find that is an incredibly unique place. It’s comprised of a mosaic of ecosystems: seasonal forests, flooded forests, savannas, and deciduous forests. The diversity of the region is completely staggering with nearly 40,000 plant species and 3,000 freshwater fish species! Pacific Temperate Rainforest: It is found in North America along the western side of the Pacific Coast Ranges and it’s the largest temperate rainforest in the world. Its Eco regions are predominantly composed of conifers. Red woods trees dominate southern limit in northern California and they are the tallest, biggest and the longest living trees on earth. It is estimated that most of the redwood trees have been in existence for more than 2,000 years, reaching heights as high as 90 meters. It also has different and numerous animal species including black bears, grizzly bears, endangered spotted owl, wolfs, sitka dear, and bald eagle.
El Yunque on Puerto Rico’s east side is the only rainforest included in the US National Forest Service and it is known for its rare trees and birds. It is one of the smallest rainforests, but has a diverse habitat. As of January 2018 El Yunque is closed as it recovers from the massive damage sustained during Hurricane Maria, but you can continue to check their website and plan a trip as soon as it reopens.
